It all started with a vision of what it could be…
"Imagine it, The San Ysidro Open, a tennis tournament along the San Diego—Mexican border where players from Tijuana and San Diego come together as a community to compete and celebrate nuesta cultura on the courts."
Club Raquetas was founded in 2023 by Antonio "Tony" Ley, a lifelong tennis fan who fell in love with the sport during what he calls the Agassi era of the 1980s. But despite his passion, Tony often felt out of place—there was little representation, and access to lessons outside of country clubs was limited. At 41, after a health wake-up call and thinking of his daughter, he finally picked up a racket. Unfortunately, his early experiences confirmed his fears: he didn’t feel welcome.
That’s why he started Club Raquetas—to make tennis more accessible and inviting, especially for the Latino community. Based near the San Diego–Mexico border, the club offers lessons for youth and adults in a fun, inclusive space, with the goal of building a vibrant tennis community and inspiring the next generation of players.
Club Raquetas is making a meaningful impact in the San Diego South Bay area, creating a space where tennis, cultura, and comunidad come together.
What began as a local tennis group has grown into a welcoming network that promotes connection, confidence, and wellness—on and off the court.
Inclusivity & Encouragement
The club is known for its friendly, non-judgmental vibe. Whether someone is new to tennis or picking it up again, they’re met with apoyo, not pressure. Advanced players and coaches help others improve while creating a fun, low-stress environment. Aquí, everyone grows at their own ritmo.
Wellness & Joy
Tennis has become a form of self-care for many. It’s not just exercise—it’s an escape from stress and a source of alegría. Members consistently say they leave feeling energized, lighter, and happier.
Family & Relationships
The impact often extends to la familia. Some members have introduced their partners or kids to the sport, turning tennis into a shared activity and strengthening bonds at home.
Beyond the Game
The club's influence goes further than the court. Social events like potlucks and Friendsgiving build lasting friendships and deepen the sense of belonging. Members often describe finding not only a hobby—but also a renewed sense of identity, purpose, and comunidad
